Chaplaincy Program Attends to Patient's Spiritual Needs

The Volunteer Chaplaincy Program at Pullman Regional Hospital provides patients, family members, and hospital staff with positive spiritual care as an integral part of the health care team.

The activities of the chaplaincy are carried out by local clergy and trained lay persons. The spiritual care provided by the hospital chaplains is designed to stem from each individual patient's needs and is not representative of any specific religious belief.

In designing the program, the intent was to create a system that would be consistent with the hospital's philosophy of patient care and the values of the hospital.

The key components of the program are:

  • Creating flexible environment for patients
  • Providing choices for patients
  • Creating an atmosphere where science and technology quietly enable people to comfort, encourage and heal

Pullman Regional Hospital chaplains seek to:

  • Empower people to be whole persons
  • Minister within the spirituality of the persons they serve
  • Provide a listening presence and to help in dealing with powerlessness, pain and alienation
  • Help individuals cope positively and peacefully in the context of spiritual care

The Chaplain Program plans for most inpatients to be visited, while it has limitations as all volunteer programs do. There is a Chaplain Coordinator that works closely with the admissions staff to provide the designated information to the daily chaplains. The chaplains work closely with the hospital staff to identify patients interested in a chaplain visit, or for family that would like to be seen.

For more information on the Chaplaincy Program, please call Jeannie Eylar, Director of Patient Care Services at 509-336-7405.
