University Pre-Health Student Volunteers
We’re excited you want to support our patients, families, and staff by volunteering at Pullman Regional Hospital! Please read the information below carefully to ensure that volunteering at Pullman Regional will be a good fit for you.
Requirements
Applying: Our application process is closed for the 2025-26 academic year. Our next application process will open in early January of 2026 for the 2026-27 academic year. At that time, you can return to this webpage to find a link to apply. When you apply, for a completed application you will need to provide a Resume, Cover Letter, Letter of Recommendation, and an Unofficial Academic Transcript.
GPA: We welcome students who are seeking a healthcare-related degree and have attained at least a sophomore standing with a GPA of 3.0 or greater, by the time they start volunteering.
Time Commitment: Volunteers will be required to make a two-semester minimum commitment of at least one (2 hour) volunteer shift per week. We do not expect our volunteers to do shifts during Thanksgiving break, Winter break, Spring break or Summer.
Purpose: Volunteers should only apply to gain experience in clinical settings in healthcare. Student volunteers gain valuable exposure to the clinical environment, while developing relationships with hospital staff and their peers. Students perform a variety of tasks including stocking supplies, assembling patient charts, and other duties as assigned by staff. We are looking for volunteers interested in Pullman Regional Hospitals values and interested in providing an amazing patient experience. Volunteers are not promised job shadowing, and opportunities will be presented as you grow as a volunteer.
Opportunities
Volunteer opportunities are available in several clinic areas of the hospital including Same Day Surgery, Medical-Surgical/Intensive Care Unit, BirthPlace, Emergency Department. We are continuing to add more departments as our opportunities grow.
EXTERNAL JOB SHADOW (high school/college student):
An external job shadow is any person who is observing a Pullman Regional Hospital staff person or clinician, here at the hospital, for no more than forty hours.
The job shadow applicant must make their own connection with the hospital staff person/clinician and have permission to job shadow from the department manager. He/she will then work directly with that hospital staff person/clinician and will not be left alone unsupervised. The department manager or designated staff person will initiate this process and communicate with the Volunteer Coordinator. The department manager or designated staff person will share the necessary forms of the hospital with the interested external job shadow. It is the responsibility of the department head or designated staff person to explain HIPPA and patient confidentiality to the job shadow and be certain all paperwork has been completed by the job shadow. All paperwork will be returned to the Volunteer Coordinator to be filed appropriately.
Please note that it can take a few weeks once paperwork is completed to start shadowing
Onboarding
- Our onboarding process will start in early April where we will contact our accepted volunteers. We will also reach out to those that aren’t accepted and see if they would like to be added to our waitlist for the next available opportunity.
- Make sure your vaccinations are up to date by visiting your primary care provider, review your vaccination history, and receive any updated vaccinations. You will submit your vaccination records to the Pullman Regional Hospital Employee Health Coordinator for review. Once your vaccination records have been approved, they will let the Volunteer Coordinator know that this step in the process has been completed. All of these health screening steps are mandatory.
- Sign a HIPAA form.
- We will conduct a background check.
- Submit a headshot for our Student Volunteer badges.
- Attend a new volunteer orientation in August before the school year starts.
Volunteers will select their department to volunteer in when all the onboarding steps are completed. When you select your department you choose to volunteer in, that will be the department you report to for the semester. If you would like to do more than 2 hours a week, you can discuss that with the Volunteer Coordinator at orientation.
